Ingress and Jawbone UP

Bzzz, bzzz, bzzzzzz… Portal in range. Power sleep is over, go and walk. Add that juice to the log. Rings any bells? Maybe not but there are stuff like this going on with newest Niantic Labs partner Jawbone UP.

Jawbone is company that had developed human-centered wearable technology and audio devices unparalleled in their technical innovation, ease-of-use and sophistication of design. They are based in San Francisco and they produced bunch of different products during the years, from the speakers, headbands and now UP wristbands.

And Jawbone teamed up with Niantic Labs to promote Jawbone UP and it’s Android app:

Jawbone UP Android

Jawbone UP – wristband

Jawbone UP is wristband that should help you move more. Not as much as Ingress but, it will bring you something that ingress is not giving you – data, lots and lots of data. How many steps you did, when are you mostly active, how did you sleep last night. That is the power of Jawbone Up.

Jawbone UP is designed to be on your wrist 24/7 and that is when is most effective. It has motion sensors, processing center, vibration engine, led, buttons and so on. Everything is very good packed in one fancy wristband. And with incredible 10 days battery life, and no you can’t use it to charge your Nexus 4 when you play ingress.

How do we see results?

With the wristband you get the Jawbone UP Android app to gather and interpret data, and without it the wristband would be pointless.

The app can do much more than just gather data, you can manually input more data and setup your wristband the way you want it. Here is what the app can do:

Hours slept, deep vs. light sleep, how long it took you to fall asleep and how many times you woke up.

Steps, distance, calories burned and time spent active vs. idle.

Log what you eat and drink and get as detailed as you want. Take a photo of your food, scan a barcode, browse the UP image gallery or search the ingredient database. UP also helps you track calories, fats, carbohydrates, protein, sugar, fiber and sodium.

UP simply and beautifully visualizes your information so, at a glance, you can understand the meaning behind your data. UP also delivers personalized insights and clear, actionable tips to help you achieve your goals.

UP helps you set daily goals and tracks your progress over time. It also lets you set helpful alarms and reminders. You can set multiple Smart Alarms to silently wake you at the ideal moment in your sleep cycle to help you wake up feeling refreshed. You can also set Idle Alerts to remind you to move when you’ve been sitting too long.

Jawbone UP and Ingress:

Niantic project promoted Jawbone UP in the mission tracking of Henry Johnson.

In it they state that Jawbone UP is used to gather some XM data and that UP was probably modified, and even connected to Ingress scanner. Here is quote from the observation report:

We have tracked an encrypted signal from Mr. Johnson and few other members of the group. The signal seems to be a continuous stream of measurement data originating from what appears to be a commercial product – UP by Jawbone. There have been prior reports of the NIA using consumer products modded to detect and measure XM as well as its physiological effects. It’s not clear if the UP bands have been tied to Ingress Scanner Tech, although it is reasonable to assume that such work is in progress.

So we are going to see some sort of integration of UP wristbands to the Ingress app. There are a lot of possibilities  and some are alarms when your portals have been attacked, when you are near enemy or neutral portal. When you are out of XM, so it will drive you to run and collect some. We just need to wait for the version of UP where wireless sync would be possible…

Jawbone Passcodes

Similar to previous Niantic labs partners they decided to provide some passcodes with their products. This time, passcodes are all Jawbone products UPC codes, but they will not do same mistake as with ZipCar plates accident, but they will push batch after batch of active codes.

What is different with this passcodes is that they will provide items based on the player level, so no more unusable L2 XMP’s and Resonators. We published one batch of the UPC codes, and rumor is that there are still some other active Jawbone codes to be found. Happy hunting.

Jawbone Ingress Invites

Jawbone is having giveaways of the Ingress invites for the UP users. Here is the latest challenge:

Record 15k before midnight tonight, 4/15, and post a screenshot of your achievement from the UP app. Use the tag #knowyourself. The first 10 to do so will earn #Ingress activation codes. Go forth!
